This general application information will clarify aspects of the application process that are specific to international students. When you submit a formal application you will be required to submit the following documents in support of your application. While you are waiting for the formal application, you can be gathering these documents and taking the required admissions examinations so your application can be filed sooner. Bulletins will be sent with the application if it is the School policy to do so.
Detailed School Records - These should include all subjects taken and examinations attempted. These records may be called various things in other countries such as relevé des notes, mark sheets, student books, etc., but in the United States are referred to as "transcripts." All records should show dates of attendance, subjects studied, grades (marks or final assessment) received, hours spent in lecture per week, and degrees or diplomas awarded. Certified photocopies of official records in the native language must be submitted along with certified word for word translations (where appropriate). Foreign language records will not be processed without a translation; and, an English translation will not be accepted without the copy of the original. Course descriptions may be required where questions of advanced standing, transfer credit, or degree equivalence may arise, but are not required at the time of application.
Columbia University cannot accept responsibility for the safeguarding of original documents. Please do not send original diplomas or any records that cannot be replaced.
If the school you attended is no longer in existence or it is impossible for you to obtain official documents from any school you have attended, please have the Ministry of Education of your country furnish an official statement testifying to the impossibility of obtaining records. The Ministry should also supply Columbia with a list of courses ordinarily followed in that school or university.
First year bachelor's degree applicants - must supply academic records for the last four (4) years of secondary school, all national examination results (such as "0" levels, "A" levels, Baccalaureate, Abitur, International Baccalaureate, etc.), and a diploma showing proof of graduation, if available at the time of application.
Transfers - second or third year bachelor's degree applicants (students who have already attended a tertiary level institution and wish to complete their first degree or a second bachelor's degree at Columbia University) - must supply the records described in First year bachelor's degree applicants (above) plus year by year academic records of all tertiary level work showing dates of attendance, courses taken and final examination results, and diplomas received (if any).
Graduate (master's degree and doctoral degree) applicants - must supply records of all courses and examinations for all university or other tertiary level work completed plus proof of graduation, when available.
Admission Examination Results - Please consult the bulletin of the school to which you plan to apply for the specific test(s) required by that school. You should take these exams approximately nine to twelve months before the term in which you wish to enroll. The following addresses can be used for ordering applications for standardized tests:
Dental Aptitude Test (DAT)  Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
American Dental Association Association of American Medical Colleges

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)  Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I)
Educational Testing Service  Educational Testing Service

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)  Subject Tests (SAT II)
Educational Testing Service  Educational Testing Service

Law School Admission Test (LSAT)  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Law School Admission Council  Educational Testing Service
Proof of Proficiency in English - If your first language is not English or you received a bachelor's degree from a country where English is not the official language, you will be required to submit a current score (no more than two years old) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum TOEFL score expected of most departments of Columbia University is 600 (written) or 250 (computer version). You may obtain an application from your local U.S. Information Service counseling or binational center or by writing to Educational Testing Service, Test of English as a Foreign Language Bulletin, Princeton, NJ 08541-6154, U.S.A.
If you are in New York City at the time of making a formal application, you may take the Columbia University English Placement Test (EPT) instead of the TOEFL. Telephone (212) 854-3584 to make an appointment for the test and inform the appropriate admissions office at Columbia of the date when the test will be taken.
Depending on your TOEFL score, you may also be required to take the Columbia University English Placement Test (EPT) at the time of registration. If your EPT test results do not show satisfactory English proficiency, you will be required to study English full-time or along with a reduced academic program. Students whose proficiency in English is not strong should plan to spend more time in the United States than the minimum required for the degree, as the points earned for intensive English do not count as points toward a degree. In many cases, financial aid given by the School cannot be used to study courses in intensive English. (See section on American Language Program).
Statement of Purpose or Essay - The purpose of the essay is to give the admissions committee a clear picture of your background, desired study plan, and your ability to write correctly in English. The essay is to be written by you, in your own words. Each school has a different writing requirement which will be defined in the formal application.
Letters of Reference - These should be obtained from present or former teachers (in most instances) who are familiar with your academic background. Each school has its own form on which the letter is to be written and it is included in the formal application.
Application Fee - Each school at Columbia University requires a fee to be submitted for processing the application for admission. The exact amount varies from school to school. Most schools will not waive the application fee.
Certification of Finances - If you are admitted to Columbia University you will need, with certain exceptions, to contact the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) for the document (Form I-20) required in support of your application for a student visa. Part of the requirement to qualify for a student visa is proof of ability to finance one's education. Please consult the bulletin of the school to which you plan to apply for that school's documentation requirement when submitting your application. Although financial documentation may not be required at this time, it will be required to qualify for a Form I-20. If you will be receiving financial aid from Columbia University, you may be required to show funds to supplement an offer of financial aid from Columbia as not all offers of financial aid cover full expenses. Married students who plan to bring their families will be required to show funds available to support their dependents. (Also see next section on Financial Planning).
Financial Planning - Please review the chart showing the estimated annual cost of attending the various schools at Columbia University found in the Guide to Fees and Payments. The chart includes: costs for a single student for tuition, fees, living expenses and books for an academic year; however, it excludes travel to and from New York City. Additional expenses need be anticipated for dependents of married students. It is essential that students anticipate the full amount of their educational expenses and secure their source of funding for the first year and any required subsequent years of school. It would be prudent to expect expenses to increase at the rate of 4-8% per year.
International students are eligible to compete for financial assistance at Columbia University, although it is not offered by all schools (please consult the school's bulletin for availability and deadlines for application). At this time, one in three international graduate students receives some type of financial assistance. Only about one in ten undergraduate students receives aid. Funding is not guaranteed from year to year, usually offered in September, sometimes not offered until the second year, and, in some departments, limited in number of years to encourage new students to enter the department.
Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science will consider foreign students for financial aid awards, but the number of awards given annually is very small. The School of General Studies (GS) provides scholarships to undergraduate degree candidates that range from $500 to $15,000 per academic year. GS scholarships are awarded to students with demonstrated academic achievement and are influenced by financial need. Columbia University awards financial aid on the basis of academic merit and financial need only, in compliance with the Ivy League guidelines.
At the graduate level, awards are usually made on the basis of past academic performance and the promise of future achievement. Financial need can also be a factor when considering an applicant for financial aid, but this alone is usually not sufficient to obtain an award. Applications for admission and financial aid are usually due at least nine months prior to the term for which the application is made.
Information for the current academic year may be found at Student Financial Services. Costs are expected to increase 4-8% each year. Please consider carefully the TOTAL cost of your education in this country. You should be aware that further resources are necessary for additional years and that you cannot depend on the University or work in this country to meet your educational expenses.

AMERICAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM - Each applicant is urged to appraise accurately his or her ability to read, write, and speak in English. While one should study English in the home country, a student can reinforce and greatly refine his or her command of English for academic purposes by attending classes at Columbia University's American Language Program (ALP). The ALP, which dates back to 1911, is one of the oldest English as a Second Language Programs in the United States. Its mission is to promote the internationalization of the University by offering a carefully integrated sequence of courses to students, business and professional people, and international visitors who wish to improve their command of English. Applications to study English for academic purposes can be made directly to the ALP. It must be pointed out, however, that admission to the American Language Program in no way guarantees admission to any other division of Columbia University.
Most ALP courses may not count as credit towards one's degree. The ALP's most advanced course, College Composition, however, is a credit-bearing university course required of international undergraduate students. Additional time and money may be required to finish a degree program if one must first study English. While overseas, proficiency in English can be measured by the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL). Upon arrival at Columbia, students may also be asked to take the ALP's English Placement Test (EPT), which may include an essay component. Placement into level 10 on the EPT qualifies students to enroll in the College Composition course.
Students with a TOEFL score of less than 600 on the written exam or less than 250 on the computer exam should expect to study English either full-time or part-time at the ALP. Most departments require that students receive a score of 600 (written) or 250 (computer) to be considered for admission.
VISA AND DOCUMENT INFORMATION - To assist you in your planning, this overview of the Student visa focuses on matters of particular concern to incoming students. Also included is information of importance to Canadian citizens and nationals of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program.
Upon your admission to Columbia University, you will be provided with an Application for Visa Certificate (AVC). The Visa Certificate itself (Form I-20), which you will need to apply for an F-1 Student visa, will be issued to you upon satisfactory completion and submission of the AVC with appropriate documentation. If you are already in the United States, you will also complete the AVC to apply for a Visa Certificate to use in support of an application for change of nonimmigrant status or to follow the procedure for F-1 Student transfer. The AVC and supporting documentation will be sent to the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO). Your accompanying spouse and children may apply for F-2 visas (dependents of F-1 visa holders), if funding to meet their additional expenses is documented.
There are two immigration-related terms which you will see frequently, entry visa and immigration status. Entry visa refers to the visa stamp in one's passport that permits one to enter the United States. This stamp is obtained at a U.S. Consulate. One's entry visa is used only for entries to the US and may expire during one's stay with no repercussions. Immigration status reflects the most recent notation on one's I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, commonly known as the I-94 Card. One's immigration status is generally the same as one's entry visa classification, e.g. F-1, B-2, J-1, etc. The I-94 Card one receives on entering the country is proof of immigration status (nonimmigrant classification) in the U.S. and also gives the length of time one is permitted to stay. On one's arrival in the U.S., the customs or immigration official retains the Arrival portion of the I-94, notes one's immigration status (nonimmigrant classification) on the Departure portion, and staples the I-94 (Departure) Card into one's passport, usually to the same page on which the entry visa is stamped.

    The SATs and ACTs
    · The University of Pennsylvania requires that all freshman applicants take the SAT I and two SAT II: Subject Tests, or the ACT with writing. These examinations are given throughout the world several times a year. Credentials earned within your educational system cannot be substituted for these examinations.
    · All testing must be completed prior to the application deadline so that the scores will reach Penn in time for consideration. Most applicants take the exams more than once.
    · Although no special preparation is required, students educated abroad may wish to request copies of two booklets, Taking the SAT I and Taking the SAT II, when registering to take these examinations. These booklets give sample questions and will help to familiarize the international student with the timed, "objective-type" examinations used by the College Board.
For more information about the SATs, contact the Educational Testing Service.
For more information about the American College Tests, contact The ACT.
    TOEFL
    · Students who are non-native English speakers must also sit for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

    · Non-native English speakers who are attending English-speaking schools are also encouraged to sit for the TOEFL, because this test may yield a higher score than the verbal portion of the SAT I.
    · Prospective applicants should register for TOEFL two-to-three months before the test administration date.
    · Be sure to designate Penn as a recipient university each time you register. Penn's school code is 2926. If you are in your final year and are testing in October or later, we recommend that you do not use Score Choice. If you have taken the test but did not designate Penn as a score recipient, please do so afterwards. Send Penn an unofficial copy of your scores as well.

    Entrance Examinations
    SAT I / ACT
Undergraduate students with good English reading skills may wish to take a standardized aptitude test, such as the ACT or SAT I.
Although the tests are not required of students who have been educated outside the U.S., strong results on either test could favorably affect the admission decision. Some U.S. Consulates require the results of a standardized examination as part of the visa application process to show the applicant's seriousness of purpose.
Scores should be reported directly to Iowa State University by the testing agency. Iowa State's codes are 6306 for the SAT I and 1320 for the ACT. There is no minimum composite score requirement.
    English Proficiency Exams
For the purpose of applying to Iowa State, English may be considered your native language if you have been raised in an environment where English is the only official language of your locality and nation, and English has been the primary language used in your home. Applicants whose native language is not English must meet an English proficiency requirement. They may do so in one of the following ways:
    · Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 173 (197 for engineering applicants) on the Computer-Based Test (CBT) or 500 and 530 respectively on the Paper-Based Test (PBT). Scores should be reported directly to Iowa State University by the testing agency. Iowa State's reporting code is 6306.
    · International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum score of 5.0 (6.0 for engineering applicants). Scores should be reported directly to Iowa State University by the Testing Center where you took the IELTS. You will need to provide them with the address to the Office of Admissions.
    · SAT I Critical Reading/ACT-English: A minimum score of 420 on the Verbal Section of the SAT I or an ACT English subscore of 16 (same for engineering applicants). Scores should be reported directly to Iowa State University by the testing agency.
What if my TOEFL score is too low?
You may wish to consider applying to Iowa State's full-time Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) to improve your English proficiency. You may retake the TOEFL as many times as you would like. While we encourage you to take the TOEFL before you come to campus, you do not have to meet the minimum score to be offered admission. We do offer conditional admission to otherwise well-qualified applicants. You would be invited to take our Institutional TOEFL the week before classes begin. If you achieved the required score, you would begin your academic program immediately. If you did not meet the minimum, you would be automatically admitted to the IEOP at Iowa State, and delay your academic study until you met the minimum requirement.
    Secondary School Preparation
If you are applying directly from high school or transferring with fewer than 24 semester credits, you should have completed the following high school courses:
    · 4 years of English or your first language
    · 3 years of mathematics, including one year each of algebra, geometry, and advanced algebra
    · 3 years of science, including one year each of two of the following: biology, chemistry, or physics
    · 2 years of social studies *
    * In addition to the above, applicants to majors within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must complete a third year of social studies and 2 years of a single foreign language. (English as a second language may be used to meet this requirement.)

    Standardized Test Requirements
Standardized tests are required for any freshman application to MIT. While your scores are only one component of your application, they are important, and you should make sure you're prepared for the testing process.
    Testing Deadlines and Reporting Scores
In order to apply for freshman admission, you must take the required tests on or before the November test date for Early Action or the December test date for Regular Action.
Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list on your application and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official. Our SAT and TOEFL code is 3514 and our ACT code is 1858.
We recommend that you list MIT as a school to receive your scores when you take the test. If you do not, please allow plenty of time for your scores to arrive at MIT. It takes at least 4 to 6 weeks for us to receive SAT scores. We only receive ACT scores once a month, therefore depending on when in that cycle they are requested, it may take over a month for us to receive them.
It is important that you register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application or MyMIT account. Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.
You can get more information and register for the SAT tests online at www.collegeboard.com, for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at www.ets.org/toefl, and for the ACT at www.act.org.
    Testing Requirements
For native English speakers: We require the SAT Reasoning Test with the writing component or the ACT with the writing test. We do not prefer one over the other. In addition, we require two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). We do not have a preference as to which science you take or which level math you take.
While we do require the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Plus Writing, we realize that some of you may also have taken older versions of these tests. In such circumstances, we will consider scores from each section of both the older and newer versions of the tests and use the highest score achieved in each section for our evaluation. This is also the case if you have taken the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Plus Writing more than once. Since reporting multiple scores will not hurt you, we recommend that when you register to take tests, you ask for all of your scores to be reported to MIT.
For non-native English speakers: You have two options: 1) take the tests required for native English speakers (see above), or 2) you may take the TOEFL and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).
If you have been using English for less than 5 years or do not speak English at home, we strongly suggest that you take the TOEFL.
    When to take which tests
Obviously, it's vital that students take all tests on or before their testing deadline (November test date for Early Action and December test date for Regular Action). Beyond that, however, choose your test dates strategically! For example, if you will be completing high school physics, chemistry or biology before your senior year, it's very wise to take the appropriate SAT Subject Tests(s) right afterwards, in June, while the material is fresh in your mind.
Most applicants do take at least one science subject test during senior year, after completing only a portion of the given course; our Admissions Committee recognizes this and judges the scores accordingly. As a general rule, however, it's best to take a subject exam just after you've completed a whole course.
The content of your math courses should determine whether you take the Level 1 or the Level 2 Math test and when. (The two tests are weighed equally in the admissions decision.) Before you choose the dates for any of your tests, particularly the math test, be sure to get advice from your guidance counselor and your teachers.
    Competitive Scores
For students we admitted in 2007, the middle 50% score range was between 670-770 for the SAT Reasoning Test Critical Reading and 720-800 for SAT Reasoning Test Math. We do not have cutoff scores for the SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests, as scores are evaluated within an applicant's context.
For the TOEFL exam, the institute minimum required score is 577 on the paper-based exam, 233 on the computer-based exam, and 90 on the internet-based exam.
    The Application Requirements
The application deadline for all international students is January 1 of the year in which you hope to enroll; all incoming freshmen enter in September. The freshman application form is the same for all applicants, international or domestic (there is no separate international application form). The application consists of the following components:
    · Biographical Information Form - Part 1 of the two-part application for freshman admission should be completed and returned immediately.
    · Essays, Activities, and Tests Form - Part 2 of the two-part application for freshman admission should be returned as soon as possible, but no later than January 1. One long and two short essays are required.
    · Standardized Tests - Testing must be completed by the December test date. These dates change each year and are set by the testing agency. Click here for specifics on our testing requirements.
    · Two Teacher Evaluation Forms - Evaluation A is to be completed by a math or science teacher, Evaluation B is to be completed by a humanities, social science, or language teacher. It is your responsibility to provide us with an official English translation of any evaluations not completed in English, in addition to the original untranslated document.
    · Secondary School Report Form - This form, which includes your school transcript, is to be completed by a guidance counselor or principal/headmaster. If your school offers predicted grades for the IB or A Levels, this should be included in the Secondary School Report Form. It is your responsibility to provide us with an official English translation of any letters or transcripts not written in English, in addition to the original untranslated document.
    · Interview - The interview is conducted by an MIT graduate in the applicant's home area. If available, your interview should be completed by the December 15th before your application deadline.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all components of the application reach us. You can view which components we have received via the online tracking system at MyMIT. Since postal mail is expensive and sometimes unreliable, you may wish to have your Teacher Evaluation Forms, Secondary School Report Form, and anything else that needs to be sent to us in hardcopy mailed in the same package. Please be sure that everything you mail to us is clearly marked with your name (please underline your family name) and date of birth. Please do not submit any application materials in binders or folders.
Your application will be read by a committee of experienced MIT admissions officers. We are familiar with many international school systems, including, but not limited to, the IB, A Levels, the French Baccalaureat, and CBSE, and we assure you that we will understand your curriculum and your context. Your application will be reviewed within the context of the resources available to you, including your situation as affected by family, school, culture, region, and country.
    Testing Requirements
Non-native English speakers have two options, which we consider equivalent. We have no preference between these options. It is your choice, and you should take the set of tests with which you feel the most comfortable:
    · Option 1: SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing; and two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).
    · Option 2: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). This option is especially recommended for students who do not speak English at home or in school, or who have been speaking English for fewer than five years.
Native English speakers must take either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing; and two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).
All students must meet the testing requirements. You may not substitute other exams (such as IB, A Levels, etc.) for the above testing requirements. Students from countries where the SAT and ACT are not offered (such as Iran and the People's Republic of China) will be considered without a full set of required test scores on a case-by-case basis.
We have no minimum or recommended scores for the SAT Reasoning Test, the ACT Plus Writing, or the SAT Subject Tests. You may wish to view testing statistics from the most recent admissions cycle here).
However, we do have minimum and recommended scores for the TOEFL. These minimums are in place to ensure your level of English proficiency. Because MIT offers no English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and English is the language of MIT, all students must show that they will thrive in our community. The minimum TOEFL scores are:
      Minimum Recommended
Paper Based Test (PBT) 577 600+
Computer Based Test (CBT) 233 250+
Internet Based Test (iBT) 90 100+
Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list on your application and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official. Our SAT and TOEFL code is 3514 and our ACT code is 1858.
It is important for all students - and very important for international students - to register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application and MyMIT account. Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.
You can get more information and register for the SAT tests online at www.collegeboard.com, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at www.ets.org/toefl, and the ACT at www.act.org.

    Financial Aid for International Students
International students are eligible for financial aid. As with US citizens and permanent residents, we consider every student for admission without regard to his or her financial need. In other words, applying for financial aid will not hurt your chances of admission. We admit the students best matched for MIT, regardless of their financial situation.
What's more, MIT is committed to providing all admitted students, including international students, with a financial aid package that fully meets their demonstrated need. Greater than 80% of MIT international students receive financial aid in the form of grant/scholarship (the average grant for international students is over $30,000 per year), totaling more than $8 million annually disbursed to international students.
Much more information is available through the Financial Aid Office.

The Georgia Institute of Technology, an institution comprised of more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, welcomes international students to its campus.
Currently, more than 3,000 students from countries other than the United States are valued members of the Georgia Tech community. Over twenty percent of Tech's international students are pursuing degrees at the undergraduate, bachelor's degree level.
The following information is provided to answer many of your questions about admission to the Georgia Institute of Technology.

    Academic Year
At Georgia Tech, the year is divided into three academic terms called semesters. New freshman MUST begin classes in the fall. International Students attend classes during two terms (usually fall and spring). You may, however, attend classes full time all three terms, including summer semester.

    Application Deadlines
International freshmen may only enter the Institute in the fall semester, which begins in late August. The completed Application for Freshman Admission and all supporting credentials must be received by January 15. In order to meet our January 15 application deadline, it is recommended that all material be mailed to the agency  by December 1.

    Financing Your Education
Financial aid is not available for international students. Please complete the International Applicant Financial Statement Form. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, download it free here. This is necessary to demonstrate your ability, or the ability of an individual or government sponsor, to finance your education at Georgia Tech. Bank Statements should reflect an account that is personal in nature. We can not accept business funds or a statement for an account where funds are not immediately accessible.
This information is required to issue the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Form I-20, which you will use to obtain an F1 (student) visa.

    Admission Decision
Your academic background should indicate that you are among the best in your class and a graduate of a secondary school consisting of 12 years or more beyond kindergarten. Your studies must include at least four years of mathematics and English, three years of science (including one year each of chemistry and physics). We recommend you take extra math and science courses. The Office of Undergraduate Admission will review your academic grades, scores earned on national examinations sponsored by the Ministry of Education or similar agencies, Leadership and Activity Record, and Personal Statement.

    Immigration Issues
Almost all international undergraduate students at Georgia Tech enter the country with F1 (student) visas. It is assumed that you will need to obtain an F1 visa unless you indicate otherwise.
Upon your demonstration of adequate financial resources and acceptance to Georgia Tech, we will issue the U.S. INS Form I-20, which you will use to obtain the F1 visa. The INS I-20 will be sent separately from the acceptance packet after the $250 admission deposit has been received.
Due to possible changes in the financial status of the sponsor, Georgia Tech will not issue an INS I-20 sooner than six months prior to the expected enrollment date.

How To Apply For Admission As A Freshman
    · Complete the Georgia Tech Application for Freshman Admission, providing all the information requested. You may access the application for undergraduate admission via the admissions website at www.apply.gatech.edu.
    · Submit the nonrefundable $50 application processing fee, drawn on either a U.S. bank or on a U.S. dollar account. Applications received without the fee will not be processed and will be returned to the applicant.
    · Complete the International Applicant Financial Statement Form. All the information requested, including signatures, must be provided. No financial document may be dated earlier than one year prior to the date of enrollment at Georgia Tech, and any other appropriate original documents, affidavits, or bank letters should be attached. This form assists our office in completing the INS Form I-20 needed to obtain your F1 (student) visa.
    · Take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I). The scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to Georgia Tech. Regardless of the system in which you have been educated, you must earn a minimum score of 440 on the verbal portion of the SAT I to be considered for admission. Applying for Admission as an International Student
    · Applying for Undergraduate Admission
    · Applying for Graduate or Professional School Admission
    · Academic Records
The University offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate programs offer bachelor’s degrees, while graduate programs offer master’s, doctoral or professional degrees.
    Undergraduate Study
If you have completed secondary-level education in a preparatory school (gymnasium, liceo, lycée, high school or senior middle school), or have reached matriculation or intermediate standards, you should apply for admission as an undergraduate at the freshman level. Freshman and transfer applicants have different application forms. Freshmen have never been enrolled full-time as college students. In general, transfer students will have completed at least 60 semester (90 quarter) units of college credit.
    Master's or Doctoral Study
You must have completed at least the equivalent of the bachelor’s degree to be considered for graduatelevel study.
    Professional Study
Many of the professional schools must severely limit the number of students admitted annually. International students are rarely admitted to University of California medical schools. Applicants must have superior scholarship and generally are required to attend an American college for one year before being admitted to a professional school.
    Applying for Undergraduate Admission
You can apply for undergraduate admission online. If you do not have easy online access, you may use the printed application. Download an application form or request an application by e-mail at ucpubs@ucop.edu or by letter to:

    Testing Requirement
Students applying for undergraduate admission as freshmen must submit scores on an approved test of mathematics, language arts and writing — either the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test. In addition, students must take two SAT Subject Tests in two different subject areas of the student’s choice: English, history and social studies, mathematics, science or languages.
These tests must be taken no later than December of the last year of secondary school. Information about the SAT is available at www.collegeboard.com and the ACT at www.act.org.
    Engineering and Computer Science
International applicants to engineering and computer science programs at the University of California are advised that the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of available spaces in the programs. Preference is given first to California residents, then to other U.S. residents. Only a limited number of extremely well-qualified international applicants can be considered for admission to these programs.

    Applying for Admission
As an undergraduate, you may apply for admission as a freshman or as a transfer student. You are a freshman applicant if you completed secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university. UCLA does not admit students into any undergraduate program who already hold Bachelor’s degrees, nor do we admit students who have the equivalent of three years [130 quarter-units or more] of transferable university work. You may not disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.
Admission to UCLA is highly selective in all majors. Preference is given to California residents, then to other United States residents. We are only able to admit a small number of international applicants each year.
More information on when and how to apply
    Academic Requirements
To be considered for admission to UCLA, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country.
Students who have attended school under the British system must present five GCSE/Ordinary-Level examinations and at least three Advanced-Level examinations with superior grades. Results of Advanced-Supplementary or Higher-Level exams should also be submitted. Students enrolled in the India/Pakistan post-secondary system must apply as undergraduates unless they have earned a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a Master’s degree in any other area, in which case they should apply for admission to a graduate program.
    Transcripts and Official Records
UCLA requires records from all secondary schools attended, showing subjects taken and grades received as well as any national or government certificates earned. Documents of all college or university coursework must also be sent in the original language, along with English translations. Do not send these documents now. If you apply and are admitted to UCLA, your admission packet will contain instructions on how to send your original records to us.
    Freshman Test Requirements
All freshman applicants are expected to take the following tests:
    · Test Requirements
o The ACT Assessment plus the new ACT Writing Test.
    - or -
The new version of the SAT Reasoning Test with critical reading, mathematics, and writing scores from the same sitting.
o Two SAT Subject Tests in two different subject areas*:
    § English (literature)
    § history/social studies
§ mathematics (Level 2 only; Level 1 will no longer be accepted)
    § science
    § languages (other than English)
    * Applicants to the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to take the following SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) that is closely related to the applicant's intended major.
    more on the test requirements
In order for your test scores to be available in time for our review, all tests must be taken by December of the year before you plan to enroll. Arrangements to take the tests in your country may be made with the Educational Testing Service. You should request that your test scores be sent directly to the UCLA Undergraduate Admissions Office.
    Language Requirements
A proficiency in English will be critical to your success. UCLA requires one of the following proficiency exams from all international students coming from non-English speaking countries:
    · International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
o a score of 7 or higher on the academic module
    · Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
o a score of 83 or higher on the Internet-based test (iBT)
o a score of 220 or higher on the computer-based test (CBT)
o a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based test (PBT)
When you take the test, have your scores forwarded by the testing service to the UCLA Undergraduate Admissions Office.
If you are admitted to UCLA and your native language is not English, we may also require you to take UCLA’s English-as-a-Second-Language Placement Examination immediately before the term in which you enter. If your score indicates a weakness in English, several terms of your program may include special courses in English for international students. If your score shows that you are seriously deficient, you will be required to gain proficiency in English before you are allowed to pursue your studies at UCLA.
    Information about Majors
UCLA offers 121 majors at the undergraduate level. Please note that the number of qualified applicants to any of the majors in engineering (including computer science) or economics (including business economics) far exceed the number of spaces available in these programs. Competition in these areas is even more rigorous than in other programs.
UCLA does not offer undergraduate degrees in architecture, journalism or business administration. See section on Undergraduate Majors for a complete listing.
    Financial Information
UCLA does not award scholarships or financial aid to undergraduate students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. International students must prove that they have sufficient funds available to them to pay for their educational and living expenses. For fall 2005, students needed a minimum of $41,500 (with an additional $5,000 recommended for additional personal expenses, contingencies and summer expenses). This minimum amount usually grows each year.
UCLA also requires that all international students on non-immigrant visas have adequate medical insurance during all periods of enrollment. More information about these requirements will be sent to students when they are admitted.
Fees, Tuition, and Estimated Student Budget
    Additional Information
Information about undergraduate and graduate courses, degree requirements, housing, and student services is included in the UCLA General Catalog.

    Test Requirements
All applicants must take the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT (with writing) and three SAT Subject Tests, and have their official scores reported to Princeton by the testing agency. Subject Tests should be in three different subjects. To register for SAT tests go to www.collegeboard.com.
All applicants must take three SAT Subject Tests. The ACT does not replace the three required SAT Subject tests.
    SAT Subject Tests for engineering
If you are considering a degree in engineering at Princeton, your three SAT Subject Tests must include either physics or chemistry and either mathematics level I or level II.
    TOEFL for non-native speakers
If English is not the language you speak at home and you are attending a school where English is not the primary language of instruction, you must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to the SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests. (Students who have attended an English-medium secondary school for at least three years are not required to submit TOEFL results.)
    Frequently Asked Questions
    Interviews
If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to accept an invitation to meet with a member of one of our Princeton Alumni Schools Committees. We have volunteers in many areas in North America and throughout the world. If there are sufficient volunteers in your area, you will be contacted by an interviewer after you submit your application.
An interview is not required for admission to Princeton and you will not be at a disadvantage if you happen to live in an area where our volunteers are not available. We do not conduct on-campus interviews, but we invite you to visit Princeton, if possible, to learn more about the University.
    Matriculation
Students may only begin an undergraduate degree program at Princeton in the fall semester. Admitted students may request to defer their enrollment for one year in order to travel, work, perform military service, or to pursue other activities—as long as they do not enroll full-time at another college or university. Requests for deferrals, including extension for a second year, must be made in writing to the Admission Office.
    Financial Aid
Princeton offers one of the strongest need-based financial aid programs available. You may apply for financial aid at www.princeton.edu/aid. If you are unable to apply online, please refer to the Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions booklet (available here soon in .pdf and .htm formats).
